CHAPTER 27

Sam Comes Home

Each day turned into the next, until weeks passed. Five weeks after Sam had left, I relaxed with Nels and Anna in their living room, enjoying a dreamy sunset through the front windows. We ate slices of Anna’s homemade, warm apple pie, and though I could have sat there for hours in the homey, cinnamon-scented room, I knew I’d have to leave soon so I could get home before dark.

I stood to carry our dessert dishes into the kitchen when I heard the thrum of an engine—overhead. An airplane! We all stared out the windows as the little floatplane flew past and was briefly silhouetted against the huge orange sun slowly sinking into the lake.

“Wonder who that could be?” Nels asked. Of course, Anna and I had no clue. Nels put on his jacket and headed to the dock just as the plane landed on the lake. Anna and I watched from the cabin window as the plane pulled to the dock and two men stepped out.

Anna pressed her nose close to the glass and squinted. “That one man almost looks like Sam.” It was too hard to tell from our distance. The man reached into the plane, and a second later, he threw a green duffel bag onto the dock. I sucked in a breath and my heart lurched.

“It is Sam!” I shouted. My heart pounded as I ran to the dock and jumped into his arms. Sam twirled me around then hugged me tightly. I know the big smile on his face mirrored my own. “You’re home!”

When we entered the dark cabin later that evening, Sam reached for the lantern—I always had to stand on a chair to light it. While he pumped pressure into the tank and struck a match to the mantel, neither of us said a word. I watched him hang the glowing, hissing lantern on the center ridgepole and take a look around. His face lit anew in the glow of the lantern, and his smile shined its own kind of light.

When he removed his coat and hung it on one of the pegs by the door, I pointed out his hat hanging on the peg next to it. “That’s exactly where you left it, Sam. I never moved it. I moved everything else, but not your hat.”

“Bonnie, I’m really proud of what you’ve done here.” He looked around the room, the corners of his eyes crinkling as he smiled. “I’m proud of you.”

“Thank you.” I suddenly felt shy, and my face grew warm. I knew I was blushing, but I didn’t understand why. I hurried Sam toward the kitchen and showed him how I had stocked the shelves.

He nodded, then turned and leaned against the counter, looking at me. I stood opposite him against the cook stove. Our hearts were so full, all we could do was smile at each other, neither of us knowing what to say. His homecoming was such a surprise I felt awed and overwhelmed by his presence.
